Kandahar cotton exports to Iran; New trade route opens after Pakistan road closure

Officials from the Kandahar Chamber of Mines and Industries say that over the past month, nearly seven hundred tons of cotton have been exported from this province to the Islamic Republic of Iran, and efforts to access new markets in Turkey and China have also begun.


Seyyed Sorwar Amani, head of the Kandahar Chamber of Mines and Industries, stated that specific programs have been implemented to improve cotton quality in order to gain the trust of foreign buyers. According to him, local producers are striving to elevate technical standards so they can compete in the region's major markets.


At the same time, the Taliban's Department of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock in Kandahar has announced that this year, cotton has been cultivated on more than two thousand one hundred and fifty hectares of farmland, showing a significant increase compared to last year. Based on statistics provided by this department, production in this province is expected to exceed eight thousand six hundred tons.


Local officials add that after the ban on poppy cultivation, farmers have shifted toward alternative crops, and cotton has become one of their primary options.


They believe that expanding cotton cultivation, in addition to creating a new source of income for farmers, can play a significant role in strengthening exports and reducing the country's economic dependency.

Following the blockage of Afghanistan's trade routes with Pakistan, exporters in the southern region of the country have turned to seeking alternative pathways.
