Uzbekistan joins Trump peace delegation over threat of extremism in Afghanistan

Abdulaziz Kamilov, in an interview with the television channel “Uzbekistan 24,” stressed that developments in the Middle East have a direct connection to the security situation in Afghanistan, and their consequences could affect the entire Central Asian region.


Referring to the recent conflicts and wars in the Middle East, Kamilov said that some extremist groups and movements have relocated from those areas to Afghanistan, and some of them have direct links with countries in Central Asia.


According to him, this situation has led Uzbekistan to monitor regional developments with special attention and to adjust its policies based on security considerations.


He added that Tashkent’s decision to join the Trump peace team is aligned not only with national security but also with Uzbekistan’s strategic interests.


Kamilov emphasized: “From a security perspective, we are certainly pursuing our own interests, and the objectives of the peace team are consistent with the fundamental principles of Uzbekistan’s foreign policy.” He also noted that ensuring national, regional, and even global security is among the goals of this participation.


The presidential advisor also explained regarding the return of Uzbek citizens from extremist groups, stating that the government has taken a humanitarian approach and created conditions for their social reintegration. According to him, this measure has been commended by the United Nations and could serve as a model for other countries.


In conclusion, Kamilov stressed that countering the threats of extremism requires broad international cooperation and should not be limited only to the United States or Middle Eastern countries; Central Asian nations must also play an active role.

This decision by Uzbekistan came after an agreement was signed between Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Donald Trump on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos. Kazakhstan has also recently joined this team.

The advisor to the President of Uzbekistan announced that the country has joined Donald Trump’s peace team due to security concerns, including worries about the spread of extremism in its neighbor, Afghanistan.
