Afghanistan's exiled women's cricket team leaves for England tour

This team consists of more than 20 Afghan athletes who were members of the Afghanistan women's national cricket team prior to the Taliban's return. With the Taliban's reimposition of rule and restrictions on women's sports, many of these players left Afghanistan and settled in Australia.


The Afghan women cricketers held their first official match in January 2025 in the city of Melbourne—a contest that marked the resumption of their professional activities after their migration.


According to the announced schedule, this tour will include several Twenty20 (T20) matches, as well as preparatory meetings and training sessions. The team members will also participate in the final of the Women's T20 World Cup, which is being held in England.


The England and Wales Cricket Board has stated that this trip is not merely a sports program but also holds special cultural importance, as it can support the presence of Afghan women in international sports arenas.


Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council established a special task force in April of last year to support Afghan women athletes who were forced to leave their country. In collaboration with cricket bodies in England, Australia, and India, the council has also launched a dedicated financial support fund for these players.

The Afghanistan women's cricket team players, who sought refuge in Australia following the political changes of 2021, are set to travel to England on June 22 this year for a sports tour. Officials from England Cricket have described this program as a significant event in the realms of sports and culture.
