Human Rights Watch condemns shooting of Herat protesters

This international organization has emphasized that the freedom to protest is a fundamental right of the people and should not be met with suppression.


Human Rights Watch has stated that Taliban forces opened fire on protesters during these demonstrations, resulting in the death of an 11-year-old child and injuries to several others. According to witnesses, the gathering had initially been held peacefully; however, after the intervention of Taliban fighters and the use of violence, the situation escalated into tension and clashes.


Reports indicate that the Taliban first attempted to disperse the crowd with warning shots fired into the air; but then also opened fire on a number of protesters who were in the process of leaving the scene. A doctor in Herat has said that several people wounded by gunfire were transferred to medical centers, and the United Nations has also confirmed the killing of a child.


This human rights organization has also expressed concern over house-to-house searches, inspections of citizens' mobile phones, and the detention of some residents after the protests ended. Human Rights Watch has stressed that such actions are inconsistent with Afghanistan's international obligations regarding human rights and constitute part of a systematic suppression of women and girls in the country—a process that, according to this organization, could be examined at the level of crimes against humanity.

Human Rights Watch has called on the Taliban to end its crackdown on protesters in Herat, release all those who have been detained, and respect citizens' right to hold peaceful gatherings.
