Taliban arrest female taekwondo athlete in Herat

According to these sources, forces affiliated with the Taliban's Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice arrested this coach from her workplace a few days ago and transferred her to an unknown location. The sources add that since the time of her arrest, her family and relatives have received no official information regarding her place of detention, her health status, or her legal status.


Individuals close to the coach's family say that their repeated efforts to follow up on her fate have been fruitless, and no responsible institution has been willing to provide answers. This lack of information has sparked a wave of concern and anxiety among the sports community in Herat and other provinces of the country.


Based on available information, the reason for the arrest of this female coach has been cited as continuing sports training activities; even as, over the nearly four years since, severe restrictions have been imposed on the presence and activities of women in all sports disciplines in Afghanistan.


Local sources also add that the coach's father and one other sports club official have been arrested by the Taliban in connection with this case.
