US suspends processing of immigrant visas for citizens of 75 countries, including Afghanistan

According to this report, the issuance of immigrant visas for citizens of countries including Afghanistan, Iran, Russia, and Somalia will be halted; countries whose nationals are believed likely to require public and government assistance if living in the United States.


Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, announced that he had ordered the suspension of processing for immigrant visas of citizens of these 75 countries so that the Department of State could reassess immigration procedures and prevent the entry of foreign nationals who may use welfare services and public benefits.


Earlier, in November, the United States had enacted laws that made the visa review process more stringent for immigrants who might become a "public charge."


This action follows previous bans and restrictions by the U.S. government on immigration and travel for nearly 40 countries and is part of the ongoing efforts by Donald Trump, President of the United States, to tighten the criteria for the entry of foreign nationals into the United States.


The report also states that this suspension will begin on January 21 and will not include applicants for nonimmigrant visas, such as temporary tourist or business visas, which make up the majority of visa applications. Demand for nonimmigrant visas is expected to increase dramatically in the coming months and years; particularly due to the hosting of the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics by the United States.
