Taliban announce Kandahar pomegranate exports to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates

Taliban officials say that in total, approximately 22,500 tons of Kandahar pomegranates have been sent abroad this year.


Bakhtar News Agency, affiliated with the Taliban, reported that this shipment was exported by a private company in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce and Investment, and its value is estimated at around $30,000. According to statistics, from 15,000 hectares of pomegranate cultivation land in Kandahar, 274,000 tons of produce were harvested this year.


Kandahar pomegranates, in addition to their domestic popularity, have many customers in international markets; however, orchard owners have warned that climate change and water shortages this year have affected the quality and quantity of the crop.


Following the reduction in trade relations with Pakistan, the Taliban have sought to increase fruit and other product exports by utilizing alternative routes. Previously, the Taliban group announced the start of exports of 500 tons of pomegranates, apples, and dried mulberries to Uzbekistan and Central Asian countries.


According to statistics from the Taliban's National Statistics and Information Authority, the value of Afghanistan's exports last year reached approximately $1.7 billion, with fresh fruits, especially pomegranates, playing a significant role in this trade.

The Kandahar Department of Agriculture announced that 20 tons of pomegranates from this province have been exported to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates via Iran.
