UNAMA confirms death of child during Herat protests

UNAMA announced on Wednesday that it has received reports of another person's death; however, this matter is still in the verification stage.


According to the agency, on the 17th and 18th of Jowza, the Taliban's Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice detained at least 30 women on charges of "violating dress code orders." In addition, dozens of other women have only received verbal warnings.


According to UNAMA, all the detained women were released on the 19th of Jowza; however, the agency has emphasized that the effects and consequences of arbitrary detentions can be profound and lasting for women and their families.


Georgette Gagnon, the acting head of the United Nations mission in Afghanistan, stated that the detention of women in the current situation in Afghanistan "carries a great stigma" and may even expose them to further violence and social and familial isolation after their release.


She reminded that Taliban officials are obligated under international human rights commitments to respect the fundamental rights of all Afghan citizens, including freedom of expression, the right to hold peaceful assemblies, freedom and personal security, and protection from arbitrary detention.


UNAMA has once again emphasized that any actions by security forces must be carried out in accordance with international legal standards; standards that emphasize necessity, proportionality, and non-discrimination in the use of force. The agency noted that citizens must be able to express their peaceful protests without fear of violence, intimidation, or retaliatory actions.


In conclusion, UNAMA has called on Taliban authorities to repeal all policies and procedures that restrict the fundamental rights and freedoms of women and girls; restrictions that encompass areas such as movement, freedom of expression, education, employment, and participation in public life.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has expressed concern over the handling of protesters in the Jibrail area of Herat city and stated that at least one child has been killed as a result of gunfire by Taliban fighters. The agency has also reported that several others have been injured due to beatings.
