UN Secretary-General warns of violations of fundamental rights of protesters in Iran

He emphasized that the fundamental rights of citizens, including freedom of expression, the right to assembly, and the holding of peaceful gatherings, must be respected and protected in Iran.


Guterres also called on the officials of the Islamic Republic to restore citizens' access to the free flow of information.


This request comes as, amid the expansion of protests, the Iranian government has cut off internet access and imposed restrictions on communication services.


The UN Secretary-General urged Iranian officials to exercise restraint and called on them to refrain from the unnecessary and disproportionate use of force against protesters.


Meanwhile, the human rights organization HRANA has reported that in the first 15 days of the protests, at least 538 people have lost their lives and the number of detainees has exceeded 10,600.

Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, announced on Sunday that reports of the killing and injuring of protesters in Iran and the widespread use of violence by the country's government have deeply shocked and distressed him.
