73 civil society and human rights organizations call for cancellation of possible EU-Taliban meeting

These organizations have warned that holding such meetings could lead to the legitimization and normalization of Taliban rule—a group that, according to them, is responsible for widespread human rights violations, the imposition of severe restrictions on women and girls, and the suppression of fundamental freedoms in Afghanistan.


The signatories to the statement have emphasized that Afghanistan under Taliban rule is not a safe country for the return of refugees and have urged European governments to halt the process of forcibly deporting Afghan citizens. They have also called on the international community not to sacrifice human rights, women's rights, and principles of justice for political considerations in any engagement with the Taliban.


The statement asserts that any formal dialogue with the Taliban must be conditioned on respect for the fundamental rights of Afghan citizens, particularly women and girls, and should not be seen as an acceptance or normalization of this group's policies.


Under the slogans "Afghanistan Is Not Safe," "No to Forced Deportations," "No to Normalizing the Taliban," and "No to Bargaining Over Human Rights," these organizations have urged European Union leaders to take into account the dire human rights situation in Afghanistan and the concerns of millions of its citizens in their decision-making. According to the signatories, any engagement with the Taliban that disregards human rights and the will of the Afghan people could have negative consequences for the country's future and global efforts to support women's rights, civil liberties, and the protection of refugees.

A coalition comprising 73 civil society organizations, human rights groups, women's rights advocacy bodies, refugee support groups, and organizations affiliated with the Afghan diaspora from Afghanistan, Europe, and other parts of the world has issued a joint statement calling on European Union leaders to cancel any planned meetings with Taliban representatives in Brussels.
