Khanjani: The Taliban have turned being from Panjshir into a political and security issue

Khanzani stated in a message on Tuesday, October 20 [28 Miizan], that the Taliban have established around 700 military checkpoints in Panjshir, with between 30 and 40 members of the group stationed at each one. According to him, the distance between checkpoints is such that each falls within the line of sight of the next.

He estimated the number of Taliban forces in Panjshir at nearly 30,000 personnel and said that most of these forces are from the southern provinces of Afghanistan. Khanzani claimed that the number of troops deployed in this province is double the number of Taliban at border checkpoints with Pakistan.

The head of the political office of the National Resistance Front described the current situation as an indication of the Taliban's high military priority on Panjshir and warned that this group's policies toward the province's residents will have political and military consequences.

Khanzani also said that the Taliban, in their treatment of Panjshir residents, do not take historical considerations or national interests into account. Referring to what he called the "political criminalization of being Panjshiri," he claimed that people of this province face threats and killings in their homes, mountains, and plains where they live.

He described the Taliban’s military and security pressures on Panjshir as creating the ground for a new enmity in Afghanistan's history and said that in the past, no region in the country had been placed under such military control and suppression.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has confirmed reports in some cases of arbitrary detentions and killings by the Taliban in Panjshir. In recent weeks, a conversation between a Taliban member and a British YouTuber also drew widespread attention; in that conversation, the Taliban member claimed to have personally killed 14 Panjshiris.

Khanzani emphasized that the extensive militarization of Panjshir and the Taliban's treatment of its residents will have consequences for this group's political and military calculations.

Abdullah Khanzani, head of the political office of the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan, says that the Taliban consider Panjshir, with their extensive deployment of military forces there, one of their most significant strategic threats and have effectively turned being a Panjshiri into a matter with political and security implications.
