On the occasion of the 81st anniversary of the United Nations' founding, she stated that the talents, aspirations, and capabilities of the Afghan people surpass the difficulties they face, and the future of this country must be shaped by its own people.

In her first message after beginning her mission in Afghanistan, Fatema spoke of her commitment to respecting the people, culture, and heritage of this country, adding that she will carry out her work based on listening to the views of the people, engaging in dialogue with them, and collaborating. She also stressed that the United Nations will support human dignity, equal opportunities, and the well-being of all Afghan people.

The head of UNAMA, referring to the history of the United Nations' presence in Afghanistan, said that this institution has been alongside the people of this country over the nearly eight decades past, during wars, humanitarian crises, droughts, natural disasters, displacement, and conflicts. According to her, the will and resilience of the Afghan people have remained steadfast throughout all these years.

Rabab Fatema was appointed on 25 Saratan (May 15), by order of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, as his Special Representative in Afghanistan and head of UNAMA. She has succeeded Rosa Otunbayeva, the Kyrgyz diplomat; prior to her start, Georgette Gagnon temporarily led this mission.

Fatema is a senior Bangladeshi diplomat with more than 30 years of experience in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy and international policy-making. Afghanistan joined the United Nations in 1946 and has since endured various periods of war, political instability, economic challenges, and humanitarian crises.

Rabab Fatema, the new head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), has emphasized that the organization will continue to support the people of Afghanistan and strive to improve their lives despite the extensive challenges in the country.
