Senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Pakistan travel to Tehran for regional talks

Reuters news agency, citing two informed sources, reported that Prince Khalid bin Salman, Saudi Arabia's Minister of Defense, General Asim Munir, Chief of the Pakistani Army Staff, and Ibrahim Kalin, head of Turkey's intelligence agency, will attend this meeting.

According to Reuters, this meeting marks the first high-level contact between Iran and all three countries—members of the Mecca Defense Pact—since the increase in Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia. Ali Bagheri, Deputy Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, has also confirmed the visit of these officials to Tehran.

Iran stands accused of providing military support to Yemen's Houthis—a charge that Tehran denies, stating that the group operates independently. Meanwhile, Iranian officials have announced that, should the parties agree, Tehran is prepared to work toward mediating between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan signed the Mecca Defense Agreement this August. Under this agreement, an armed attack on any one member is considered an attack on all pact members. Ministers from the member countries also held an emergency meeting in Riyadh earlier this month to discuss preparations for the rapid deployment of forces and military assets in Saudi Arabia.

The process of reviewing and ratifying this agreement began in the Turkish parliament last week and is ongoing; Pakistan approved the pact in the same week. Pakistani officials had previously spoken of the potential activation of this agreement and the deployment of forces to Saudi Arabia; however, no open clashes involving Turkish or Pakistani forces with Yemen's Houthis have been reported to date.

Senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan are scheduled to travel to Tehran on Monday, October 25, to meet with Iranian officials and discuss regional issues and security coordination. This meeting comes amid escalating tensions over Houthi attacks from Yemen and growing security concerns for Saudi Arabia.
