Civil activists call for international action to prevent forced evacuation of Omid Sabz settlement

According to the signatories, a special court under Taliban administration declared more than 1,507 jeribs of land in Green Hope Township as "emirate property" this past month of Thawr, and the group's Ministry of Justice has ordered residents to vacate. Additionally, tenants have been instructed to deposit rent payments into the ministry's account, rather than to the original owners.

The letter states that Taliban Ministry of Justice agents, starting from late September, have gone door-to-door, sealing off some homes and forcing residents to sign rental forms. The signatories have also reported beatings and arrests of protesters.

Based on this report, residents have been asked to pay 4,000 afghanis per room per month in rent—an amount that, according to them, also covers back rent from April 2026 as well as rent for the next six months. Otherwise, residents will face eviction from their homes.

The signatories claim that more than 30 residents and township representatives were arrested for protesting and were released only after pledging to vacate their homes within two days. They have also stated that some vacated homes, including properties of owners living abroad, have been handed over to Taliban members or their affiliates.

Around 800 civil society activists and human rights defenders, along with members of 28 organizations, have written an open letter to the United Nations, the European Union, and the British government, urging them to take action to prevent the forced eviction and confiscation of properties belonging to residents of Green Hope Township in western Kabul. They have warned that the Taliban's pressures threaten the security and property rights of thousands, particularly Shia Hazaras.
