Britain: Taliban must be held accountable for human rights abuses

On Wednesday, October 27, referring to the extensive restrictions against Afghan women and girls, she said that their deprivation from public life, education, employment, and participation in decision-making has deprived millions of citizens of their fundamental rights and freedoms.

The UK representative emphasized that her country will collaborate with its international partners to support human rights in Afghanistan and continue its efforts to defend the rights of all citizens of the country.

She also highlighted restrictions on freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, and freedom of religion and belief, the shrinking space for civil society and independent media, and the situation of ethnic and religious minorities as concerning issues in Afghanistan.

In another part of her remarks, the UK representative said that London, in line with the concerns of the UN Special Rapporteur, also expresses concern about the consequences of the Taliban's policies on Afghan children and their long-term impacts on the future of the country.

In this regard, she asked the UN Special Rapporteur what further actions the international community can take to mitigate the long-term consequences of the Taliban's policies on children's rights, their access to education, and their future opportunities.

The United Kingdom's representative at the Third Committee meeting of the United Nations General Assembly stated that London is deeply concerned about the human rights situation in Afghanistan under Taliban rule and will continue its efforts to hold the group accountable for its actions.
