UN: Protecting journalists and ensuring their safety in Afghanistan must be a priority

She stated that journalists play a vital role in fostering constructive dialogue, laying the groundwork for lasting peace, and strengthening good governance through their work, and that safeguarding their lives and security must become a fundamental priority.

The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative raised this issue in a message on November 2, the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists. According to her, men and women who strive to uncover the truth and provide information must enjoy the necessary security and protection.

These emphases come at a time when, in recent years, organizations supporting media freedom have repeatedly warned about restrictions, threats, and the dire situation of journalists in Afghanistan.

Reporters Without Borders announced in the month of Jauza this year that Afghanistan has become one of the main hubs for the exile of journalists. According to statistics from this organization, since the Taliban's return to power, at least 677 Afghan journalists have left the country due to threats, with the support of this organization.

The organization's report states that the number of Afghan journalists under its protection accounts for nearly half of the total exiled journalists supported by the organization worldwide.

Additionally, Reporters Without Borders has included the name of Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban leader, in its latest report among 33 individuals and entities that, according to the organization, have restricted media freedom in 2026.

Rohab Fatima, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan, has called for serious attention to the security and protection of journalists in Afghanistan and other parts of the world, emphasizing the importance of media activities.
