UN calls for better urban planning for Kabul

This agency states that with appropriate support, Afghanistan's capital can be transformed into a vibrant city and a suitable living place for millions of people.

The agency, on Tuesday, October 27, coinciding with the approach of "World Cities Day," published maps of Kabul on the social network X. These maps show that Kabul's urban area in 2024 AD has expanded dramatically compared to 2004.

According to United Nations reports, Afghanistan's urban population reached approximately 11.4 million people in 2024. This figure has faced even greater increases in the past two years, following the return and forced deportation of a large number of migrants from Pakistan and Iran.

The United Nations had previously announced that more than 27 percent of Afghanistan's population lives in cities. Kabul and Herat, which are among the country's most populous cities, are facing challenges stemming from rapid urban population growth and climate change.

Reports from the United Nations Human Settlements Programme indicate that during the two decades of the republican system, the urbanization trend in Afghanistan increased; however, many cities expanded without sufficient planning and the creation of necessary infrastructure.

Migration from rural areas to cities, the return of migrants from neighboring countries, poverty and unemployment in rural areas, and natural events—including drought and flooding—have been cited as the main factors driving increased urbanization in Afghanistan.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme has warned that the expansion of Kabul city has heightened the need for orderly urban planning and greater investment.
