Asif Durrani: Russia and India are giving international legitimacy to the Taliban

In an article on the Arab News website, he wrote that Moscow's approach toward the Taliban has shifted from efforts to resolve Afghanistan's problems toward engagement and compromise with this group.

Durrani, referring to Russia's recognition of the Taliban government and the expansion of India's relations with this group, said that the engagement of these two countries could strengthen the Taliban's position in the region.

He also expressed concern about the activities of armed groups in Afghanistan, particularly the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, and accused the Taliban of failing to address Islamabad's security concerns.

He viewed the failure of the recent Moscow format meeting to issue a joint statement as a sign of disagreement over the Taliban's security commitments and warned that separate relations between regional countries and this group could undermine the role of this framework.

Durrani concluded by saying that increased support from Russia and the expansion of India's relations with the Taliban might reduce Pakistan's pressure on this group. In his view, if the Taliban does not take effective action to prevent attacks by the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, Islamabad will be forced to review its policy toward this group.

Asif Durrani, Pakistan's former special representative for Afghanistan, has warned that the expansion of relations between Russia and India with the Taliban could enhance the international legitimacy of this group and reduce Pakistan's leverage over it.
