Melania Trump calls for lasting ceasefire in meeting with Russian and Ukrainian representatives

Melania Trump, referring to the importance of preserving civilian lives, stated that the human consequences of war should not be overshadowed by political and military disputes. She expressed hope that the experience of the Olshansk ceasefire could lay the groundwork for broader agreements and a reduction in hostilities between Moscow and Kyiv.

Present at the meeting were Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's Human Rights Ombudsman; Yana Lantseratova, his Russian counterpart; David Arakhamia, a Ukrainian parliamentary representative; and Kirill Dmitriev, a special representative of the President of Russia. The First Lady of the United States said that during the formation of the ceasefire, she had followed up on issues such as mine neutralization, aerial imagery, transit and movement routes, the transfer of the wounded, and their access to hospitals.

Kirill Dmitriev expressed gratitude for Melania Trump's role in saving human lives and reuniting children who had been separated from their families as a result of the war. During this meeting, he presented the First Lady of the United States with a painting by an 11-year-old child rescued from Olshansk. David Arakhamia also described the recent ceasefire as the largest step toward reducing tensions since 2022 and emphasized the continuation of these efforts.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Melania Trump handed over two official letters to the Russian and Ukrainian representatives for delivery to Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the presidents of the two countries. The White House also announced that she had invited her guests to view two historical artifacts: an 18th-century medicine chest that had been rescued from the White House fire in 1812, and a commemorative cup presented in 1899 to the French ambassador for his role in ending the Spanish-American War.

Nevertheless, the parties involved have not yet released clear details about the nature of the First Lady of the United States' mediation. Following this meeting, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the Olshansk ceasefire demonstrated that stopping the war depends on Vladimir Putin's decision. He added that the return of prisoners and individuals detained in Russia also hinges on the will of the Russian President.

Melania Trump, the First Lady of the United States, hosted representatives from Russia and Ukraine at the White House and emphasized the necessity of establishing a lasting ceasefire between the two countries during this meeting. The session was held following the implementation of a six-day ceasefire in the Olshansk region; an agreement that paved the way for the evacuation of hundreds of residents trapped in the area.
